Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering
G.P.A. 3.92/4.00
Summa Cum Laude
Recipient of the Most Outstanding Engineering Senior, John Stark, and Chevron Scholarship Awards
Work Experience Oct 1998 – Present Solutia Chemical Company Cantonment, FL
Jan 03 – Present Senior Process Engineering Specialist - Adipic Acid
Process Expert - Served as the process expert and provided technical support/expertise to the manufacturing engineers for any long term process related issues
Advanced Modeling and Calculation support – Performed thermodynamic modeling, statistical analysis, process simulators (HYSYS and Aspen Plus), or CFD (computational fluid dynamics) to troubleshoot or solve process related issues
Raw Material Usages - Accountable for raw material usages/yields for an 850 MAR (Million Annual Rate) Process Safety Management (PSM) production process
Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) – Use of root cause failure analysis techniques to determine the cause of process equipment infancy failures
Columns Design – Used the “Rating Feature” within Aspen Plus to design distillation and absorber columns containing trays (valve, sieve, & bubble cap) and structured packing
SSLG – Experience with processes containing solid, slurry, liquid, & gas (SSLG) process streams
Environmental Compliance - Performed data analysis to ensure the facility was in environmental compliance with Title V permits from the DEP/EPA, Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR). Served as process expert and solved any issues with the production area’s pollution control equipment. Use of AP42 factors to estimate emission rates.
Carbon Credits – Performed initial design of a SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system to be used to destroy VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds), HAPs (Hazard Air Pollutants), NOx, and N2O. The net reduction of these compounds would be sold as carbon credits on the open market totaling 10s of millions of dollars.
Cost Savings - Generated 12+ million dollars in annual cost savings and over 4 million dollars of cost avoidance (details available upon request)
Troubleshooting – Solved issues with pumps, control valves, heat exchangers, absorbers, reactors, evaporators, ion exchange columns, compressors, thermal oxidizers, decanters, liquid/liquid separators, selective catalytic reduction units, distillation columns, crystallizers, and centrifuges
Advanced Process Control - Designed MPC (Multivariable Process Controllers), PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and basic process controllers for process optimization
Plant Testing and Optimization - Conducted “Bump” and Fractional Factorial Experiment/Plant Testing for process optimization and quality improvement
Capital Projects - Designed and sized equipment including new pumps, control valves, variable frequency drives (VFDs), piping systems, control systems/interlocks, relief vavles (RVs) & rupture disk, heat exchangers, distillation & absorber columns and tanks for new capital projects totaling 25+ million dollars
Installation and Start-up Assistance – Intimately involved in the installation, check out, and start-up of new capital projects
Hazard Analysis - Served as the process expert for Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA)
Interlock Design - Designed interlocks and other safety device systems based upon the necessary protection indicated from the PHA and LOPA analysis
Lean Manufacturing – Applied concepts of Lean Manufacturing to reduce process operating cost
Liaison Engineer - Currently serving as Solutia’s Liaison Engineer with the University of Florida’s IPPD (Integrated Product and Process Development) program for a project to biologically treat process waste
Guest Operations Technical Support – Provided technical & troubleshooting support to a guest operation who produced nitrous oxide from Solutia’s process waste gas
Waste Treatment – Investigated reverse osmosis (RO) for treatment of process waste
Training and Mentor – Served as a mentor for new engineers and provided process modeling training to site engineers
Jan 01 – Dec 02 Process Engineering Specialist - Power House
Process Expert - Served as the process expert and provided technical support/expertise to the manufacturing engineers for long term process related issues
Optimization - Generated a “Purchase versus Generate” power optimization program which was used to determine when to purchase power from the local utility company or generate power with the site’s GE Frame 7EA Cogeneration Unit
Optimization - Generated a “Natural Gas versus Fuel Oil” optimization program which was used to determine which fuel was most economical based on daily natural gas pricing
Process Modeling - Performed the site’s first electrical and steam optimization balance which consisted of 60 MegaWatt electrical load and 1500 kpph steam usage
Plant Testing - Conducted boiler optimization test by measurement of CO in the flue gas
Revenue Generation - Correction of an accounting methodology error for guest operation resulting in an additional 5+ million dollars revenue to Solutia Chemical Company
Cost Savings - Identified an additional 5+ million dollars of cost savings during tenure in the Power House. One of these ideas was later adopted and has generated 3+ million dollars in annual savings to Solutia Chemical Company
Oct 98 – Dec 2000 Process Technology Engineer/Manufacturing Engineer – Adipic Acid
Expansion Project - Performed M&E (Material and Energy) balance for a proposed 230MAR production expansion. Generated the initial P&IDs along with the 30% cost estimate with the assistance of Flour Daniels engineering group and performed all equipment sizing and control specifications
Cost Savings - Performed numerous plant optimiza...
