STRUCTURAL ENGINEER
Knowledgeable engineer-in-training working towards a professional license and a successful, long-term career as a structural engineer. Currently studying for a Masters degree in Structural Engineering. PENNSYLVANIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION DISTRICT 11-0 - BRIDGEVILLE, PA
Civil Engineer, Bridge 2009 to 2010
Supported the Bridge Management Unit with evaluation and maintenance of approximately 1800 structures in the district including culverts, R.C. slabs, prestressed concrete bridges, steel girder bridges, and trusses. Duties included performing load rating analysis in accordance with AASHTO specifications and field data, designing necessary repairs for deteriorated bridges, performing APRAS heavy hauling permit reviews, and carrying out field views to verify measurements as well as completion of repairs.
- Completed all required analyses within 60 days of the inspection date.
- Designed small repairs such as web plates or additional beams for structurally deteriorated bridges and/or prepared work orders for weight limit postings if successful repairs were not possible.
- Performed hydraulic analysis of design sites using WMS Applications to determine the required opening of the new structure.
- Completed detailed analysis of Gusset Plates on several trusses to determine their load carrying capacity. Made recommendations for repairs on a number of locations with reduced capacity due to corrosion.
- Certified as a Bridge Inspector in Pennsylvania from February, 2009 to February, 2011.
- Communicated effectively with townships and local communities regarding necessary bridge closures or weight limit postings.
Civil Engineer Trainee 2008 to 2009
Gained experience in several departments including the bridge design unit, the construction unit, the geotechnical unit, the roadway design unit, the traffic unit, and the maintenance unit.
- Performed duties of an inspector during construction of a curved girder ramp connecting Route 28 to Interstate 279 in Pittsburgh, PA. Witnessed the placement of a composite concrete deck and the approach ramps as well as asphalt paving on the interstate.
- Assisted in documentation and calculations on the condition and maintenance of rocker bearings to determine if repair and resetting of the bearings was required. This work was implemented following the drop of two spans onto the pier on the Birmingham Bridge in Pittsburgh, PA.
