Duties include but are not limited to staff management and ensuring patient flow through the emergency department, triage, rapid assessment, trauma activation, cardiac monitoring, IV initiation, medication administration, orthopedic appliance application, laceration set-up, specimen and evidence collection, patient teaching and documentation.

2009 Seattle Cardiology Seattle, WA.

Cardiac Clinic Nurse: Provided temporary team leadership during a transitional period from Seattle Cardiology to Swedish Physician Services.  Duties included RN graduate training and mentoring with special emphasis on intensive telephone triage, time management and prioritizing work flow. Was instrumental in teaching staff how to order and interpret laboratory test, and reporting critical values promptly. Preceptor duties also included pre-procedure Cardiac Catheterization teaching and Coumadin Clinic management. Understanding and adjusting Coumadin dosage based on each patient’s PT/INR, and their specific target ratio. Mentored, performed and provided EKG interpretation during the patient check in process, as well, as, ICD and CPT coding.  Assisted with Cardiac Stress Testing, Stress Echocardiograms, Nuclear Medicine Scans, Holter Monitoring and Pacemaker Interrogation. I audited Cardiac Catheterizations in both the clinic and at Swedish Hospital. I worked closely with Same Day Surgery to develop a routine to assure all pre-procedural testing was ordered and implemented prior to admission. I was responsible for teaching staff how to refill prescriptions and how to monitor for potential medication reactions and side effects.  I developed an efficient process in working with insurance companies to preauthorize patient testing and medications. Each authorization was tailored to the needs and financial considerations of each individual patient and the insurance company. A procedure was developed to facilitate critical care admissions to Swedish Hospital from the patient’s home or from the clinic. Responsibilities included patient assessment, ACLS monitoring, IV initiation and medication administration while waiting for critical care transport. Team members became proficient in Electronic Medical Recording using EPIC and Logician. Steps were taken to make sure staff was able to comfortably use Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel and Photoshop, as well as competent in ICD-9 and CPT coding. Finally, I consistently taught by word and example the importance of compassionately providing reassurance, hope and strength for all patients, a great number of whom are adjusting to the reality of a life-changing diagnosis. Above all, I stressed the need to be a strong patient advocate and to support patients in becoming their own advocates.
