SUMMARY
Over twenty seven years of experience effectively designing on various projects of structures for use in the space environment.
RELAVENT EXPERIENCE
Structures
• Design on Orion (deep space launch vehicle for manned space flight) service module (SM) support test of composite Manufacturing Development Articles (MDA) by providing instrumentation drawings for strain gages, thermal couples and displacement sensors using Pro-E cad system.
• Design Engineer on the Thermal Protection System (TPS) Support Team for the Orion Program. Responsible for the design of the Launch Abort System (LAS) bumper pads and the thermal barriers between the tiles on the Crew Module backshell.
• Composite Design Technical Lead. Lead less experienced engineers on the design of composite components on the SM. Coordinated with manufacturing engineers on tooling required for these components to be fiber placed on the Michoud fiber placement machines.
• Ground Test Article (GTA) Technical Lead. Cordinated with the Orion test group to obtain requirements for the SM GTA.
• Service Module Secondary Structure Lead. Obtained the requirements for all secondary structure on SM and flowed them down to designers and analyst to obtain Mass of the secondary structure and compare to the components being supported by them. The results were then presented to the program Chief Engineer.
• Service Module Design Lead. Responsible for drawing tree integration with manufacturing, coordinating scheduling of drawing release with the planning group, work issues that may arise during drawing release and presenting to management on a weekly basis the status of drawing release.
• Tank (ET) Design group. Completed numerous design changes and change summaries. Worked Return to Flight Investigation for the ET using CATIA for the investigation of the loss of TPS on the bipod and provided preliminary layouts coordinated with manufacturing to create a stereo lithography bipod.
• Composite design. Started in composite design by working design allowable program providing drawings for test specimens and working with materials engineers on the testing of the specimens. Task lead on Intertank Access door for the ET from cradle to grave including setting up fabrication at Baltimore site for first test article. Evaluated various bolt analysis programs for composites IRAD. Presented paper The Intertank Access Door: A Study in Composite Adaptability at the Eighth DOD/NASA/FAA Conference on Fiberous Composites in Structural Design 1989.
• Worked on Shuttle-C program (large launch vehicle) and learned CATIA cad system to provide preliminary layouts for the study phase of this program.
• Worked the initial design of A2100 filament wound pressurant tank (small tank) for the A2100 satellite with materials engineer to obtain requirements and ensure that the design met those requirements.
• Worked NDE of composites IRAD where I learned Thermography, and hand layed standard panels with built in flaws for testing equipment before scanning and built tooling to use for larger equipment. Developed tooling and process to NDE (using thermography) composite nose cone for the ET.
• Worked on X-33 Multi-Lobed (a quarter scale pressuri...
