PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Rockwell Automation, Chelmsford, MA 2014 to Present
Optoelectronic Engineer (Contractor)
• Supported Test Equipment Engineering and Quality Control in developing photoelectric proximity sensors. Characterized and analyzed optoelectronic and optical components for system integration.
• Developed test station for beam mapping photoelectric sensor TX/RX overlap fields.
• Study production issues to determine corrective action to improve yield and increase efficiency.
MEGGITT SENSING SYSTEMS, Londonderry, NH 2007 to 2013
Senior Mechanical Engineer
• Led a cross functional team developing an optically based mass air flow system for a gas turbine engine (US Navy). Based upon optical path averaging (VIS/NIR). System performed successfully in adverse environment. Completed all formal design reviews.
• Optoelectronic circuit design (LEDs, photodiodes, op-amps, digital ICs), optomechanical design (free space optics, alignment, homogenizing diffusers, etc.), system troubleshooting, signal processing, trade-off analyses, requirements definition, system integration and sensor algorithm development using LabVIEW.
• Supported a combustion monitoring system which detects contaminants such as sodium, potassium and sulfur in gas turbine engines. System is used by US Navy for condition monitoring. Technical assistance and support to UV/IR flame detectors for building systems and “light off detectors” (UV) for military jet aircraft in conformance with FM standards. Familiarity with test standard DO-160E for airborne avionics.
• Trade Compliance classification and documentation of aerospace products such as oil level and pressure sensors, fuel flow sensors, signal conditioners, and cockpit indicators. Utilized SAP to list information enabling all Meggitt locations access to information in one place such as BOMs and engineering drawings.
TEXTRON SYSTEMS, Wilmington, MA 2007
Senior Electro-Optical Engineer (Contractor), Directed Energy Programs
• Developed a system which closely monitored the main resonator mirror of a15 kW DPSS ceramic Nd:YAG laser during operation. Developed beam shaping optics for the laser delivery system and data acquisition hardware enabling increased data collection for system integrity.
BAE SYSTEMS, Lexington, MA 2004 to 2006
Principal Systems Engineer, Systems Engineering Group
• Applied broad technical knowledge and skills to develop and test LWIR thermal imagers and night vision for military products (M-16s) and commercial handheld devices. Analyzed system response time, responsivity, temporal noise, detector bias and display functions. Determined device minimum resolvable temperature difference, programming CPLDs and microcontrollers, troubleshot and tested thermal electric cooler operation over temperature, system integration of FPAs and optics. Temperature, vibration, and bore sight testing for alignment. Used NVTHERM for system modeling and MatLab for focal plane array analysis.
• Supported manufacturing achieving most efficient transition of products to production. Provided technical insight to ensure products met design goals. Met intended results as specified by customers.
• Interacted with client UAV engineers resolving night vision video surveillance systems problems, solved with software upgrades.
• Developed verification & validation test planning per MIL-STD-810F test standard. Analyzed and documented software and hardware requirements for LWIR thermal imagers and night vision equipment. Projects included circuit card failure analysis (manufacturing issues), image quality analysis, displays, system integration, spatial noise reduction, power budgeting, and circuit analysis.
2004
Assistant Technical Staff, Quantum Electronics Group
• Bioaerosol sensor design, development and testing using laser systems, UV sources, and photomultiplier tubes. System detected fluorescent signatures. Semiconductor development and testing of Gallium Nitride LEDs on sapphire substrates. Cryogenic testing of optical materials such as Nd-YAG laser crystals.
• Evaluated UV LEDs, semiconductor lasers, and PMTs for biohazard detection systems. Optical bench design using optics, filters, housings, emitters, and receivers optimizing system performance.
FIBER OPTIC NETWORK SOLUTIONS, Northborough, MA 2001
Senior Fiber Optic Engineer, Product Engineering
• Built and characterized DWDMs, interference filters (laser-based), optical add-drop modules, and couplers for telecom customers. Micro lens alignment and optical filter analysis. Designed hermetic packaging allowing device operation. Developed bonding methods for fiber collimators, filters and lenses.
• Created process procedures for manufacturing facilitating product assembly. Maintained documentation of product design, development, and testing. Tests done per Telcordia qualification methodology. Used optical spectrum analyzers, lasers, power meters, and fusion splicers.
