Project lead for some phases of development and verification of an implantable electromechanical FDA class III device. This project is a drug delivery pump which delivers solid form drug to the designated area of interest in the body therefore eliminating the side effects by taking the pill orally. The device can be used to treat mainly epilepsy, and other neurological conditions. (Total Addressable Market: > $2B in US)
Achievements
- Project lead for a group of 10 in order to design and development of cost-effective, biocompatible, and power-optimized sensors that can accurately locate the drug at any time in or outside of the implantable drug delivery pump.
- Designed and drove experiments (DOE), worked closely with mechanical engineers, biologists, pharmacologists, and software engineers in order to verify functionality of an implantable electromechanical drug delivery system.
- Strategized and presented project status update as biweekly meetings to all team members including CEO, VPs, and other involved engineers and interns.
- Lead for creating models in COMSOL and SolidWorks, and in-vitro experiments of disintegration of solid micro tablet in various catheter designs. Presented the resulting publication at Micro and Nanotechnology in Medicine conference.
- Interviewed, supervised, and trained more than 9 engineering interns with different backgrounds to create an in-vitro bench test brain phantom, and processing the data. Provided technical feedback and support as needed.
- Assisted in budgetary planning for writing a $10M project funded by DoD and University of Pittsburgh.

Research Assistant, Physiological Monitoring lab
Drove the electromechanical implementation of a self-powered wearable biosensor. The mechanical movement of the torso during breathing is used as a renewable energy source for this biosensor, enabling continuous wireless medical monitoring without feeling any metabolic burden on body. This project was funded by Renewable Energy and island Sustainability (REIS) center at University of Hawaii. The vast majority of the markets this device can serve are in renewable energy, bio-medical, military, kinesiology and rehabilitation, and textile engineering.
Achievements
• Provided team leadership and project management for a team of researchers including 10+ interns and students from electrical, mechanical engineering, and kinesiology and rehabilitation science departments over the course of a 4 year multi-million dollar project.
• Pioneered innovative techniques for force, power, and energy estimation via torso movement modeling using Doppler radar, accelerometer, and Infrared cameras resulting in two publications.
• Formulated, and designed experiments for 3D modeling of human pulmonary system biomechanics. Created new mathematical methods to calculate the best angle of placing the radar to increase the accuracy and sensitivity based on subjects’ breathing pattern.
• Designed, fabricated numerous functional prototypes, and successfully improved a non-invasive biosensor, resulted in an invention disclosure as “Self-Powered Wearable Biosensors”.
• Provided two sets of human testing protocols approved by University of Hawaii IRB.
• Streamlined the clinical testing and analyzed the bio statistical results for 100+ human subjects.
