ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Seasonal First Flush Effect Study on Red Cedar River:
•Water sample collections from Red Cedar River during summer rain events and spring snow melting events.
•Long time analytic measurement of sodium/chloride/nitrate/phosphate/dissolved oxygen/E coli concentration and raw database accumulation.
•Qualitative and quantitative analysis of correlation between precipitation/discharge rate and nutrients concentration, DOC-metal interactions, microbe-metal interactions.
•Hot moments and hot spots identified, establishment of transportation pathway theory for targeted nutrients (e.g. NaCl) from land-use loading sources in Red Cedar River
•Data input for watershed modeling
EPA 2013 Campus RainWorks Challenge:
Many of MSU’s centrally located parking lots are impervious to rainfall infiltration. Storm water collected here is directly discharged into the Red Cedar River without any retention or treatment. As a result, this creates a potential safety hazard to students, faculty, and nearby buildings. In order to help maintain safety, and promote a healthier ecosystem, our plan is to transform multiple parking lots with open green infrastructure.
