Technical Experience

Graduate Student Researcher, Materials Department
University of California, Santa Barbara
Sep. 2012-Present
Advisor: Prof. G. Robert Odette

Designed, fabricated, characterized, and tested ductile-phase-toughened tungsten composites considering application in high-heat flux components of future nuclear fusion reactors.

Laboratory experience includes metallographic preparation up to EBSD-quality finish, optical microscopy / SEM / EDS, tensile / hardness / fracture testing, spark plasma sintering, vacuum hot pressing, electroplating, and wet etching. Completed coursework and training on TEM.

Taught self to program in Mathematica and developed a model based on group’s previous work to predict fracture resistance and load-displacement curves for ductile-phase-toughened composites. Worked on group projects apart from thesis work in Visual Basic.

Presented results in annual departmental seminars, in semi-annual and annual progress reports to the US DOE Office of Fusion Sciences, and at professional conferences.

Undergraduate Researcher, Materials Research Science and Engineering Center
University of Massachusetts Amherst
Jun. 2010-May 2012
Advisors: Prof. Thomas Russell and Prof. Narayanan Menon

Designed, constructed, and performed independent experiments under guidance of advisors and mentors to observe the dynamics of thin film wrinkling.

Prepared polymer solutions, used spincasting to create films, us...
